Fifth Avenue Art Gallery is please to announce that member artist Lori Jenkins’ watercolor, Just Be Claws, has been selected for the American Watercolor Society’s 151st Annual International Exhibition to be held at the Salmagundi Club in New York. The dates of the exhibit are April 9 through April 28, 2018.
Jenkins is a signature member of both the American Watercolor Society, based in New York, and the National Watercolor Society, based in California. These are the two most prestigious international watercolor societies in the United States. Being a signature member of either of these groups means that the artist can add AWS or NWS after their signature on their artwork.
Lori has had work accepted into the American Watercolor Society’s Annual Exhibition five times, in the years 2008 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2018. The first time Jenkins entered was in 2008. To receive signature status membership in this organization you must be accepted into the show three times, not necessarily consecutively. She received her signature status in 2013 and won an award. She has gone to New York every year for the show, with the exception of 2014, and plans to be there this year.
Twice she has been accepted into the National Watercolor Society’s Annual Exhibition, 2013 and 2017. To become a signature member of this society you must be accepted to the show and then send a body of work consisting of 3 unframed, matted originals. When she submitted in 2013 she was unaware that the body of work had to be very similar in subject and style, hence she didn’t get status that time. When she was accepted in 2017 she submitted three lobster paintings which complimented the accepted painting in the exhibit. This effort awarded her signature status in this National Watercolor Society.
Jenkins holds a BA in Studio Art from Florida State University. However, as with many artists, life got in the way of her painting and she found herself busy with a family business and raising children. When the children were almost out of high school she took a watercolor class at the Foosaner Art Museum school and has been hooked every since. She began entering competitions and quickly found her work winning awards. This led to signature status in several groups including Florida’s Watercolor Society and The Southern Watercolor Society. However, once you achieve NWS or AWS status you generally drop the other signatures from your work.
Jenkins says, “I enjoy painting realistically using bold colors and creating a sense of drama. I like to intensify the use of color and contrast but the bottom line is that I paint what I see.”
Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne, Florida is proud to claim Ms. Jenkins as a long time member. Her work is on display there. Originals and giclees are available for purchase.
