Exhibit Dates: January 30, 2017 - February 25, 2018
Capture Brevard 2017 opens on Tuesday, January 30 at Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in the Eau Gallie Arts District. There will be a First Friday Opening Reception on February 2, 2018. From 5:30 pm through 8:30 pm you are invited to come and meet many of the photographers and enjoy light refreshments as you experience Brevard through the eyes of members of The Camera Club of Brevard. Begun last year with the first Capture Brevard 2016 as an internal show for the membership of the camera club only, this is the first show open to the public for viewing. This exhibit will run through February 25, 2018.
This is not a juried competition, but rather a chance for photographers of all levels to share their personal vision of Brevard County. The idea for this show began with John Buck and his reaction to a series of books, A Day in the Life, each shot in a different location. The Camera Club of Brevard has taken that idea and expanded it to be a vision of life in Brevard County stretching over a period of time. Each photographer is given six months to shoot imagery and then is able to submit up to 5 photos. There are no restrictions or requirements to the photos. The intention of the project is to showcase the talent of the membership. It is the club’s hope to make this an annual event. Work has already begun on Capture Brevard 2018. The dates of shooting for that show are October 2017 through May 2018.
There were 180 images submitted to this project, but being a small gallery, Fifth Avenue can only offer space to about 30 of these images. The entire 180 images will be presented to the camera club as a slide show at one of their meetings.
The Camera Club of Brevard was begun in 1980 and currently boasts a membership of 220. It is a socially active organization and is open to any level photographer. They meet monthly at the Civic Center in Eau Gallie and offer a speaker at each meeting. The specialty of each speaker varies month to month in order to offer something for everyone’s niche interest.
John Buck, the current president of Camera Club of Brevard, says the goal of the club is goal is education and photography. “Let’s have fun, let’s learn photography.” (John Buck) They also offer a variety of workshops, from location workshops, technical workshops, and field trips in addition to monthly speakers. The club has also earned the distinctive honor of having a “Canon Explorer of Light” come to address the club once a year. This is a Canon sponsored event.
Capture Brevard 2017 is not a tourism show, nor is it intended to be a fine art exhibition, but rather a generally happy celebration of Brevard County. For information on the club or to learn about membership you can visit http://ccbrevard.org.
