Art Competition Finalists
Hosted at Ocean Art Gallery

FLAGLER BEACH, FL – At 6 PM on May 8 ten local high school students will have their art displayed for a panel of three judges who will select one student to be the winning artist for District 6 in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition.

District 6 is represented in the House of Representatives by Ron DeSantis and the Congressman will visit with the students, their families and friends, as well as members of the public who attend this annual event. Since 1982 over 650,000 students have participated in this program to inspire student artists. The winning artist each year has his or her art hung in the US Congress for a year.

Ocean Art Gallery, which hosted the District 6 event in 2015 and 2016, will display the students’ art in its main gallery space to provide maximum opportunity for all to view and enjoy the artwork. The ten finalists were chosen through a voting program on Facebook and the winning artist will be selected by three judges appointed by gallery owner Frank Gromling.

The judges are Charles Schaefer, well-known plein air oil painter and former Director of Epcot’s Art in the Gardens annual juried art show; Rick Cannizzaro, acrylic painter and resident artist for Fossil Hunters television show and the Central Florida Zoo; and Jane Mealy, longtime art enthusiast and current chairwoman of the Flagler Beach City Commission.

While the gallery is normally closed on Mondays, it will be open on May 8 from 12 noon for the public to view the students’ artwork. Gromling said, “Hosting this student event is one of the most fun things I do all year. The chance to meet aspiring artists in their early career stages is a great treat for me.”

The gallery is located at 206 Moody Blvd. (SR100) in downtown Flagler Beach, with full parking behind the building and on local city streets.
