CALIFORNIA’S KARI POWELL
RE-VISITS OCEAN ART GALLERY
The Only Florida Gallery Chosen To Showcase
Her Art Welcomes Artist Home For Encore Show
FLAGLER BEACH, FL- On December 3, 2016, acrylic painter Kari Powell will return to Ocean Art Gallery for her month-long show with a gala reception at 6:00 pm. This will be the artist’s second appearance at the gallery following her 2015 initial visit and introduction to the northeast Florida art market. Her colorful artwork has been an important part of Ocean’s diverse contemporary art collection by superior artists.
The public is invited to meet the artist during this free event at 206 Moody Blvd. (SR 100) in downtown Flagler Beach. Kari will demonstrate her painting technique by completing a painting while visiting with guests.
A lover of art and creativity from a young age, Kari Powell found her medium in paints and ran with it. Inspired by the post impressionistic movement, particularly Van Gogh, Kari’s work captures movement and energy in such a way that it almost seems to move by itself. Kari’s paintings often depict the ocean and ocean life, a subject connected to her late father and his great love of the ocean and fishing.
After graduating from the Art Institute of San Diego with a Bachelor's Degree in interior design, Kari worked for seven years in the design industry before starting her own design company, Kari Powell Art + Design. She utilizes her artistic skills by creating custom artwork and murals for her design clients and renders drawings for architecture firms.
Seventeen years after she first started painting, this self-taught artist is still discovering new techniques to improve her art while staying true to her unique, dynamic, style. A technique she enjoys is layering different colors of paint, plus a clear varnish or even other mixed media, such as sea glass, to give her paintings a three-dimensional effect that would be impossible to create otherwise.
As Kari captures the colors and entrancing nature of the endless California sunsets, she brings to life the rhythmic nature and power of the waves. To further capture the energy of her subjects, Kari chooses dramatic color combinations, which are often highly contrasting, adding to the sense of movement within each piece. She paints by intuition, letting the pieces show her where the paints should go, resulting in beautiful, natural pieces. Often her art, painted on wood or canvas, is coated with resin or lacquer to create a high-gloss look that tends to give a wet effect, further adding to the immersive nature of her tidal paintings.
Kari loves to share her passion with others and enjoys teaching painting. Her art is displayed throughout Southern California, including The Mint Gallery in San Clememente, SKD Studios in Newport Beach, and Surf Hut Art Gallery and Bliss 101 in Encinitas.
As always, the art opening at Ocean Art Gallery, held on the first Saturday of every month, is a free event to which everyone is invited. Light refreshments are served. Saturday night in Flagler Beach is a lively time as locals and visitors enjoy the Oceanside ambiance created by more than a dozen restaurants within easy walking distance of Ocean Art Gallery’s prime location right on Moody Blvd. (SR 100). With two entrances and a large parking lot behind the gallery, there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the art opening and downtown Flagler Beach, especially important in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.
