About the Class:
In 2006 I read a poem that changed my life…of course I didn’t know it at the time. I read it, admired it and closed the book, never giving it another thought. A year later I found myself reading the very same poem, but this time, something was different,…I was different and I was finally ready and open to understand the meaning behind it. It was no longer whispering the words from the page,it now screamed and pushed and shoved at me…and in a crashing uproar, a voice inside me yelled… “listen to your heart…listen, to what you already know.” That Poem was “The Journey” by Mary Oliver and the first line read “One day you finally knew what you had to do and began”. It was that simple, that clear, that deep inside me I knew, I always knew, that I wanted to create art, that I wanted to put it out into the world, and that I would be willing to listen to whatever the world screamed back at me. I only needed to begin, and so I did. This poem, at the time, started me on my creative journey, what I later realized, was that it not only helped the Creative in me to come out, but that it also helped me to find my own courage,my own path,my own voice.

Throughout these years, Mary Oliver’s poems have inspired me, they have guided me and centered me. Though most believe Mary Oliver to be one of the greatest female poets of American History, I see her only as a friend, one who quietly tells me, there is no time to waste.
These pieces were inspired by my love for the words of Mary Oliver.
