“COAST TO COAST”
Landscapes and Seascapes in Oil
Michiel Bullock was born in Kinston, North Carolina in 1949. He lived in Kinston, Durham and Wilmington, North Carolina until, at age nine, he moved with his family to West Virginia. Five years later they moved to Woodbridge, Virginia, where Mike spent his teenage years.
Mike started painting with oils in 1967, though he had painted with acrylics and water colors since elementary school. Throughout Junior High and High School Mike took art classes, but, beyond that he had no further formal training. He worked as a paste up artist and continued to paint, focusing almost entirely on landscapes and seascapes. He had a short stint with a small gallery in Bluefield, W. Va. His obsession for landscapes began to grow from 1965 to 1969 when his curiosity, and (some rebelliousness), led him to believe that he had to see for himself what the rest of the country, beyond the mid-Atlantic, really looked like. At age sixteen… and certainly without the foreknowledge or approval of his parents… he hitch hiked from Northern Virginia to San Diego, California… just to see the country.
Mike was hooked on the adventure and the changes in scenery that he saw. It was inevitable that similar trips would follow over the next four years. Those trips gave Mike a firsthand view of the landscape that would supplement the photos from calendars and magazines that served at the time as models for paintings.
To this day, Mike and his wife Susie (and in the comfort of an automobile, cruise ship or airliner), use vacation trips to gather ideas from hundreds of photographs taken during their travels. The Bullock’s reside in Satellite Beach.
