The Art Students Guild of Brevard is currently accepting applicationsfor new members. Applications may be picked up at the Guild, located on the third floor of the Arcade Building in downtown Melbourne, 909 East New Haven Ave. Visitors may come during open studio drawing sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 12:30.
Members of the Guild may use the facilities and equipment at any time, get reduced rates on model fees and workshops and classes offered at Guild, can show their paintings in ongoing exhibitions in the Guild,
and at the 905 Cafe, and also enjoy the fellowship of other artists. On Tuesdays members meet for plein-aire painting at various locations in the area. On Wednesday and Saturdays models pose for portrait painting or drawing, sometimes in costume. Thursday is life drawing, with short gesture poses, leading to longer poses. Instruction is not offered during open studio drawing sessions; this is the time to practice one's skills. Model fees are charged; see the blog or call for details.
During the year themed exhibits challenge the members, and the work is shown. Last fall the members painted self portraits, and currently are preparing a show featuring eating places in downtown Melbourne.
The Guild has been continually serving the artists of Brevard County for 50 years. The loft rooms are large and filled with easels, horses and other art equipment. There are shelves full of still life objects, and members often paint there from photographs, sketches, or bring in fresh fruit or flowers.
